Poulnabrone Dolmen

Poulnabrone Dolmen one of Irelands most iconic monuments from the prehistoric era is situated high up on the Burren limestone plateau. It is also one of the most visited location in the Burren second only to the Cliffs of Moher and is also the oldest dated megalithic monument in Ireland. Poulnabrone is sometimes wrongly translated as “Hole of Sorrows” However, “brone” is derived from the Irish bró, meaning quern

Poulnabrone Portal Tomb

Poulnabrone is classified as a portal tomb which are known as having two large stones standing on each side of the entrance capped with a huge capstone. Another huge stone lies on the ground towards the rear of the tomb and was most likely a second capstone fitted in under the main capstone and covered the back of the tomb.

Built on Limestone

Poulnabrone was built on limestone pavement surrounded by a low mound of rocks. The upright stones aren’t wedged into the fissures which are common in the limestone. The limestone flagstones which were used to build the monument would have been extracted from the surrounding limestone pavement.

Archaeology of Poulnabrone

Excavations in the 1980’s revealed the remains of 21 people in the main tomb chamber and dating of their bones show that the tomb was in continual use for a period of 600 years between 5,200 and 5,800 years ago. The bones show signs of wear that suggests hard physical labour was the norm for the people of the time

Don’t think twice – use this service!

Traveled to Ireland with my 27 year old son. Was worried about navigating my way to the Cliffs from Galway. So pleased I used Fergus. You get more than a stress free ride. You see more than you would on your own and hear the best stories. Our driver Fergus was a top shelf guy and six hours with him went by like a five minute walk. Thanks Fergus!!

Amazing Experience

My daughter and I traveled with Fergus for two days, from our base in Galway on private tours of Connemarra and the Cliffs of Moher/the Burren. Those two days were the highlight of our trip to Ireland! Fergus was a fantastic driver, very professional but also so charming, warm and friendly. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the area and made sure we saw the well known highlights as well as many hidden treasures.

Great Service!

We used this service from Shannon to the Cliffs of Moher. We had a wonderful driver/guide, knowledgeable and friendly. He took us to the the most picturesque sites. He was a very knowledgeable guide, very friendly and easy to be with. He even brought our daughter a booklet about her namesake,Tara, and treated us to a tour by one of the park guides. I would highly recommend their service.
